In 2020, ‘Sodammi’ was developed as a sweetpotato with a slightly moist texture, excellent palatability, and appearance. It was derived from a cross between ‘Hogammi’ (IT327288), which has a slightly moist texture and excellent palatability, and ‘Kyushu No. 121’ (IT309496), which has a yellow flesh and good appearance. The storage roots of ‘Sodammi’ have a purple-red skin, yellow flesh, and an ovate shape. ‘Sodammi’ storage roots exhibit a slightly moist texture and are more tender than those of the check variety ‘Jinhongmi’. The sweetness of steamed storage roots of ‘Sodammi’ was 19.1, which was 24.8% higher than that of ‘Jinhongmi’. Palatability of steamed storage of ‘Sodammi’ was better than that of ‘Jinhongmi’. The marketable storage root yield of ‘Sodammi’ was 19.6 MT/ha during the normal season culture. ‘Sodammi’ is moderately resistant to Fusarium wilt and root-knot nematodes. ‘Sodammi’ had very good storability, as there was almost no decay rate and no internal cavitation during long-term storage. Cultivation of the ‘Sodammi’ variety is expected to expand considerably, as it has characteristics favored by consumers, farmers, and distributors due to its excellent palatability, appearance, and storability (Registration No. 8789).

Perilla has a long history of cultivation and consumption in Korea. Its cultivar ‘Sodam’, which is used for its oil and powder, was developed from a cross between two parents ‘K015926’ and ‘Miryang27’. The parents were crossed in 2004, and their progenies were selected from F3 to F5 generations through pedigree method. Regional yield trials (RYTs) were conducted in four regions from 2012 to 2014. ‘Sodam’ is a light gray and small spherical-seeded cultivar. It matures earlier (October 2) than ‘Saeyeopsildeulkkae’, a standard cultivar, and the number of flower clusters per plant as well as the number of ears per cluster is higher in ‘Sodam’ than in the standard cultivar. Its seeds contain approximately 46.4% crude fat, and the oil is rich (about 65.0%) in alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid. ‘Sodam’ is characterized by upright plant growth with narrow branch angles. The average yield of this cultivar was 1.23 ton/ha in adaptable regions. ‘Sodam’ is expected to be a potential cultivar source for production of good quality perilla oil (Registration No. 6729).

The sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) variety ‘Sodamchal’ was developed and registered by Department of Sothern Area Crop Science, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 2013. This variety was developed from the cross between ‘Hwanggeumchal’ with brown grain and ’Jungmo4001’ with semi-dwarf trait. ‘Sodamchal’ is the first semi-dwarf stature with waxy endosperm ever developed in Korea. The yield performance of ‘Sodamchal’ was 2.95 MT/ha in local adaptability test for 2 years. It had 91 cm culm length, which was 58 cm shorter than that of ‘Hwanggeumchal’, 26.3 cm panicle length, 22.0 mm thickness of culm, 21.1 g in 1,000 grain weight. It could be reduce the lodging problem and also adapted to mechanized cultivation. ‘Sodamchal’ produces high quantities of polyphenol and radical scavenging activitiy with diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) in pigmented testa. Above all ‘Sodamchal’ is suitable for use as a parental source for the development of improved pollinator parent lines for developing semi-dwarf sorghum with waxy endosperm and antioxidant activity.
