  • This study was carried out to create new popcorn variety. ‘G-Popcorn’ was made by single crossing with two inbred lines, the seed parent, GP3, and the pollen parent, GP4. The hybrid was made in 2009 and selected in 2014 after investigating characteristics for three years from 2012 to 2014. ‘G-Popcorn’ was evaluated on 2 or 3 places in Gangwon-do for three years. ‘G-Popcorn’ showed higher lodging tolerance and popping volume in contrast to the check variety ‘Oryunpopcorn’. The plant height is 213cm indicating 5cm lower than that of ‘Oryunpopcorn’. Also, ration ear height of plant height of ‘G-Popcorn’ is 59%. The weight of 100 seeds was 15.5g, similar to that of ‘Oryunpopcorn’. The popping volume of ‘G-Popcorn’ was about 28.3cm3/g, higher than 25.0cm3/g of ‘Oryunpopcorn’. The yield of ‘G-Popcorn’ was 467kg/10a in regional yield trials for three years, which was 7% higher than that of ‘Oryunpopcorn’.
국내에서 소비되는 옥수수는 찰옥수수를 제외하고는 대부분 수입에 의존하고 있다. 그 중에서 간식용으로 많이 이용되는 팝콘옥수수의 경우도 국내에서 소비되는 대부분은 외국에서 수입되고 있다. 2015년 팝콘용 옥수수의 수입량은 1만톤으로 수입액이 898만 달러에 이르며 팝콘옥수수의 국내 시장규모는 3천 600억원 이며, 이중 영화관 팝콘이 90%로 3,230억원, 봉지 팝콘은 370억원으로 추정되고 있다(FACT 2016). 팝콘옥수수 는 높은 섬유질 및 적절한 지방과 당이 적어 건강 다이어트 식품으로 각광받고 있으며, 또한 암의 방지와 치주질환 치료제로 이용되는 β-sitosterol을 다량 함유하고 있어 치아건강에도 유리 하다. 또한 팝콘옥수수는 탄수화물 및 단백질, 인, 철분이 풍부하 여 별다른 가공 없이 즐길 수 있는 자연 알카리성 식품이어서 쾌적한 몸 건강 유지에 적합한 간식으로 평가되며, 어적어적 씹히는 소리, 보슬보슬한 질감의 재미있는 먹거리로서 극장, 놀이공원 등을 중심으로 소비가 계속 증가하고 있다(Kim et al. 1995). 미국에서는 팝콘옥수수가 1800년대 후반부터 상업화 되었으며, 1912년에는 7,700ha가 재배되었다(Eldredge & Tomas 1959). 최초의 팝콘옥수수 교잡종은 Japaness Hulless 집단으로부터 유래한 자식계통 C1과 C6의 단교잡종으로 1934 년에 개발된 Minhybrid250이었다(Eldredge & Lyerly 1943). 현재 미국에서 상업화되고 있는 팝콘옥수수 품종 가운데 일부는 마치종 불임으로 마치종 또는 스위트콘과는 교잡이 되지 않으며, 이는 팝콘옥수수 종자채종 시 마치종과 교잡을 방지하여 종자생 산의 효율성과 경제성을 동시에 높이고 있다. 팝콘옥수수를 재배 하고 있는 대다수의 농가들은 다수확, 내도복, 병충해 저항성 품종을 원하고 있는 반면, 소비자는 팝콘으로 가공 시 부드럽고, 풍미가 좋으며, 껍질이 없거나 적은 것을 원하기 때문에 현재 미국 내 상업적 교잡종은 이러한 특성들을 적절히 포함하고 있다(Chang 2013).
국내에서는 Park et al.(1971)이 전국 재래종 옥수수를 수집하 여 계통화 하였고 조합능력을 검증한바 있으며, Choe et al.(1978)은 전국에서 수집한 948개의 재래종에 대한 주요 형태 적 특성을 조사하였는데 그 중 전체의 12%이상이 팝콘옥수수였 으나, 알이 작아 팝콘용으로는 이용성이 낮다고 보고하였다. 국내에서 육성한 팝콘옥수수 품종은 튀김옥 1호(Park et al. 1992)가 육성되었으나 상용화되지 못하였으며, 옥수수연구소에 서 개발하여 공급하는 오륜팝콘(Chang 2013)이 전국적으로 재 배되고 있으며 국내산을 선호하는 생활협동조합을 중심으로 소비가 이루어 지고 있다. 그러나, 아직 재배적으로는 도복에 약하고 품질은 수입산에 비해 튀김부피가 높지 않은 실정이다.
따라서 본 연구는 재배적으로 안정적이며, 튀김부피도 향상된 팝콘 신품종 ‘지팝콘’을 육성하였기에 품종의 육성경위, 주요특 성 및 수량성을 보고하고자 한다.
재배 방법
신품종 ‘지팝콘’의 특성 및 수량검정 시험은 2012년 홍천(5월 10일 파종), 평창(5월13일), 영월(5월7일), 2013년 홍천(5월2 일),평창(5월21일)과 2014년은 홍천(4월30일), 평창(5월20일) 에서 지역적응시험을 수행하여 표준품종인 오륜팝콘과 난괴법3 반복으로 비교 검토하였다. 시비량은 10a당 N-P2O5-K2O로 14.6-3-6kg, 퇴비는 1.5톤을 기비로 시용하였다. 재식거리는 1주 1본으로 하여 열간거리 60㎝, 주간거리 25㎝로 평탄하게 재배하는 방식으로 3열 3.5m를 한 개의 시험구로 하여 재식밀도 는 ha당 66,000주로 하였다. 수량 및 튀김부피의 통계처리는 R 프로그램(V3.2.3)을 이용하여 최소유의차검정법(Least Significant Difference Test, LSD)를 통해 평균값을 5% 유의수준에서 비교 하였다.
생육특성 및 수량형질 조사
출사기는 시험구별 전체 개체 중 50%이상의 개체에서 수염이 출현하였을 때를 기준으로 하였으며, 간장, 착수고는 시험구별 균일한 곳에서 10주씩 조사하고, 수량 및 이삭특성조사는 시험구 내 균일한 2열에서 앞뒤 약 2주씩을 제외한 열별 10주씩 총 20주를 수확하여 조사하였다.
튀김부피 측정
수분함량이 11.0~12.0%인 팝콘옥수수 알곡 170g을 취해 국 내에서 개발된 튀김기계로 popping후 5000ml mass cylinder를 이용하여 튀김부피를 측정하였으며 3회 반복측정 하여 단위 무게에 대한 부피의 증가로 튀김부피(㎤/g)를 나타냈다.
육성경위
‘지팝콘’의 모본인 GP3은 농촌진흥청에서 육성 중인 자원을 분양 받은 자원의 모집단에서 1995년 0세대 8번으로 시험을 수행하여 10번의 자식과 선발을 거쳐 2008년에 10세대 23번으 로 선발하여 GP3로 명명하고 계통명을 부여하였다. 부본인 GP4 는 농촌진흥청에서 육성중인 자원을 분양받은 자원의 모집단에 서 1995년 0세대 6번으로 시험을 수행하여 10번의 자식과 선발 을 거쳐 2007년 10세대 3번으로 선발하여 GP4으로 명명하고 계통을 부여하였다. 최초의 교잡종 교배조합 구성은 2009년에 고정도와 초형이 우수한 계통으로 시작하여 2010년 생산력검정 예비시험과 2011년 생산력검정시험을 거쳐 2012부터 2014년 까지 3년간 ‘튀교56호’의 이름으로 강원도지역적응 시험을 실시 하였다. 그 결과 ‘튀교56호’는 팝콘옥수수로 우수성이 인정되어 2014년 12월 강원도농업기술원 신품종선정위원회에서 신품종 으로 선정하고 ‘지팝콘’으로 명명하였다(Fig. 1).

고유특성
‘지팝콘’는 오륜팝콘과 동일하게 교잡유형은 단교잡종이며, 부위별 안토시아닌 색소 함량은 오륜팝콘과 달리 연한 자색을 보이는 특성이 있다. 전체 웅수 및 수염색은 자색이 매우 약하고, 약의 색은 오륜팝콘과 비슷하게 약하게 표현되며, 과피색은 황색 이다(Table 1).

주요 생육 특성
‘지팝콘’은 오륜팝콘 대비 출사기는 3일정도 빠른 69일이고, 간장은 213㎝로 오륜팝콘의 218㎝ 보다 다소 작았으며, 착수고 율은 59%로 다소 높았다. 이삭길이는 15.6㎝, 착립장은 15.1㎝, 이삭폭은 3.2㎝로 오륜팝콘과 특성은 비슷하였다(Table 2). 100 립중은 15.5g으로 16.0g인 오륜팝콘보다 다소 가볍다. 도복지수는 1.5로 3.5의 오륜팝콘보다 도복에 강한 특성이 있다(Table 3).

튀김부피 분석 및 수량성
튀김부피는 수확하여 건조한 후 수분율(11.0~12.0%)일 때 측정하였으며, 지팝콘이 28.3㎤/g 으로 25.0㎤/g 의 오륜팝콘보 다 튀김부피가 높았다(Table 3). 2012~2014년, 3년간 3개지역 에서 실시한 강원지역적응시험 결과, 지팝콘의 평균 종실중은 467㎏/10a로 오륜팝콘 대비 7% 높은 수준이었다(Table 4).

적응지역 및 재배상의 유의점
지팝콘은 지역적응시험 수행지역이 강원도로 한정되어 강원 도에서만 재배가 가능하고 1대 교잡종이므로 매년 갱신된 종자 를 이용해야 한다. 과다시비 및 밀식재배를 피하고 최대의 튀김부 피를 유지하기 위하여 저장 중 적정수분(11.0~12.0%)을 유지하 여야 한다.
‘지팝콘’은 강원도농업기술원 옥수수연구소에서 개발한 단교 잡종으로 수량성 및 튀김부피가 우수한 품종육성을 목적으로 팝콘옥수수 자식계통 GP3을 종자친으로 하고 GP4를 화분친으 로 한다. 출사일수는 오륜팝콘 대비 약 3일 빠르며, 이삭특성은 오륜팝콘과 비슷한 수준이었으나 도복지수는 1.5로 3.5의 오륜 팝콘보다 재배안정성이 높으며, 수량성은 467kg/10a로 오륜팝 콘대비 7% 증수되었다. 튀김부피는 28.3㎤/g 로 25.0㎤/g 의 오륜팝콘보다 튀김부피가 높았다.
