  • Baekgeumok, a sweet corn hybrid made by crossing inbred KSE15 and KSE21, was developed by the maize breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science, Rural Development Administration in 2015. Baekgeumok silks at 63 days, similar to Danok3 (check variety). The plant height is 179 cm, higher than check variety, and the ear height is 105 cm, similar to check variety. Baekgeumok has an excellent lodging resistance. The fresh ear yields were 6,411 ears and 1,141 kg in 10 a. Pericarp thickness was 39 µm and sugar content was 19.5 °Bx. Sensory evaluation value was 6.1 and flavor was excellent. This hybrid can be cultivated in Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do. Seeds of Baekgeumok must be renewed annually, because this hybrid is a single cross hybrid. This sweet corn hybrid must be cultivated at least 200 m from areas with other corn varieties, because of their recessive gene. When cultivated at high density, the ear size and ratio of kernel set length / ear length will be lower in this hybrid than in standard cultivars. This hybrid requires pest control because it is susceptible to corn borer infestation. Drainage management is important in the rainy season. (Registration No. 6725)

옥수수(Zea mays L.)는 전세계적으로 매우 중요한 작물로서 식용 및 사료용 뿐만 아니라 바이오에너지 등 다양한 분야에서 이용되는 세계 3대작물 중 하나이다. 특히 찰옥수수, 단옥수수, 튀김옥수수 등 식용옥수수는 우리나라에서 한여름 대표적인 간식으로 이용되는 작물이다. 그중 단옥수수는 우리나라에서 재배시작과 관련한 정확한 문헌이 기록된 것이 없으며, 처음으로 단옥수수가 문헌으로 기록된 것은 농촌진흥청 작물시험장에서 도입품종 시험으로 단옥수수가 재배된 기록이 존재한다(Park et al. 1984). 한때 우리나라 남부지방에서 단옥수수는 고소득 작물로 인식되어 재배되었지만, 국내에서 단옥수수 종자 개발이 미비하여 외국에서 단옥수수 종자가 수입되어 종자 보급의 불안정적이어서 점차 재배지역이 감소하였다(Lee et al. 2013). 또한 수입되는 단옥수수 품종은 Sugary(su)인자를 포함하고 있어 당도가 낮으며, 이에 반하여 초당옥수수는 당도가 단옥수수에 비하여 높지만 발아율이 낮아 농가에서 재배하는데 큰 어려움을 보였다(Hallauer 2001). 최근 소득 증가에 따른 식문화 변화 및 우리나라 국민연령층 변화에 따라 단옥수수에 대한 국민적 관심의 큰 증가로 남부지역부터 중부지역까지 단옥수수 재배 희망농가가 증가하고 있으며, 이에 따라 우수한 품질을 가지며 재배안정성 등을 포함한 우량 단옥수수 종자 개발이 필요한 실정이다(Lee et al. 2014).
국내 단옥수수 개발 품종 역사는 1983년 ‘단옥1호’(Park et al. 1984)을 시작으로 1989년 ‘단옥2호’(Park et al. 1991), 1998년 ‘금단옥’, 2001년 ‘단옥3호’(Jung et al. 2002)가 개발되었다. 최근에는 2009년 ‘구슬옥’(Lee et al. 2013), 2011년 ‘고당옥’(Lee et al. 2014)이 개발되었다. 이러한 단옥수수는 찰옥수수에 비하여 재배생육기간이 짧아서 남부지역 등에서는 양파, 마늘 등과 2기작 재배 작부체계을 형성하여 농가 수익성을 향상시킬 수 있다(Jung et al. 2012, Park et al. 1991, Shin et al. 2014, Lee et al. 2014).
이러한 시대 변화에 따라서 농촌진흥청 국립식량과학원에서는 개발된 단옥수수 ‘백금옥’은 당도가 높고 식미가 매우 우수한 품종으로 그 육성경위와 주요특성 그리고 품질특성 및 수량성 등을 보고하고자 한다.
‘백금옥’의 지역적응검정시험은 2012년부터 2015년까지 4년간 수원, 청원, 홍천, 대구, 진주 5개 지역에서 실시하였다. 시비량은 옥수수 표준시비법을 적용하여 N-P2O5-K2O=15-3-6 kg/10a으로 주었으며, 질소는 기비 50% 7~8엽기에 추비로 나머지 50%로 분시하였다. 검정시험은 난괴법 4반복으로 실시하였고, 재식밀도는 60×25 cm (6,600본/10a)로 하였다. ‘백금옥’ 파종은 매년 4월 중⋅하순에 지역검정시험지역 5개소에서 2립씩 파종한 후 3~4엽기에 1주에 1개체만 남기고 솎아 주었다. 내병⋅내충성 검정은 자연발생조건에서 깨씨무늬병(Bipolaris maydis)와 그을음무늬병(Exserohilum turcicum)은 출사후 2~3주에 20주이상을 대상으로 조사하였으며, 조명나방(Ostrina furnacalis) 7월 중순에 100주 이상을 관찰하여 조사하였다. 농업과학기술연구조사분석기준(RDA 2012)에 따라 기타 농업적 특성(생육특성, 도복 등)과 품질 검정(당도, 100립중, 립두께, 식미평가 등)실시하였으며, 수량성은 수원, 청원, 홍천, 대구, 진주 5곳 에서 10a 당 생산된 이삭중에서 상품성 있는 것에 대하여 이삭갯수를 조사하였다. 시험 결과 통계처리는 SAS 9.2 (SAS Institute inc.)를 이용하여 Student’s t-test로 수행하였다.
육성경위
단옥수수 ‘백금옥’(수원단68호)는 2003년에 육성된 자식계통 KSE15을 모본(종자친)으로하고, 같은해인 2003년에 육성된 자식계통 KSE21을 부본(화분친)으로 하여 2009년에 교잡한 se유전인자를 보유한 단교잡 단옥수수 품종이다. 단교잡 단옥수수 품종 ‘백금옥’은 2010년에 생산력검정시험을 실시하였고, 2012~2015년까지 지역적응시험을 실시한 결과 여러 가지 농업형질이 우수하여, 2015년 농작물직무육성신품종선정심의회에서 신품종으로 선정되어 품종명을 ‘백금옥’으로 명명하였다(Fig. 1).
고유 특성 및 농업적 특성
단옥수수 ‘백금옥’은 웅수의 영기부를 제외한 나머지 부분에 안토시아닌 색소가 중간정도로 발현한다. 수염색이 자색이며 웅수색은 담자색이다. 립색은 황색과 백색을 가지는 bi-color이며 입질은 감미종이다(Fig. 2). ‘백금옥’의 출사일수는 63일로 단옥3호에 비하여 3일 늦으며, 간장은 179 cm로 ‘단옥3호’(159 cm)보다 매우 큰 편이지만 착수고율은 32%로 ‘단옥3호’(35%)와 거의 비슷하다. 이삭길이는 ‘백금옥’(20 cm)이 ‘단옥3호’(18 cm)보다 2 cm 길었지만 폭은 가늘었으며, 착립장률은 거의 비슷하였다(Table 1).
병충해 및 내재해성
‘백금옥’의 병충해 및 내재해성은 2012~2015년 수원과 홍천에서 검정하였다. 깨씨무늬병과 그을음무늬명 병해 검정과 조명나방 충해 검정에서 백금옥과 단옥3호가 비슷하였으며 도복에서는 백금옥이 ‘단옥3호’에 비하여 강하였다(Fig. 3, Table 2).
품질특성
‘백금옥’은 se유전자를 보유한 단옥수수 품종으로 Table 3에서 보는 바와 같은 품질특성을 나타내고 있다. ‘백금옥’의 당도는 19.5 °Brix로서 단옥3호에 비하여 매우 높은 당도를 나타내었으며 전체기호도도 우수하였다.
수량성 및 채종시험
‘백금옥’은 수원, 청원, 홍천, 대구, 진주 5개 지역에서 2012부터 2015년까지 4년간 지역적응시험 결과 10a 당 평균이삭수는 6,411개, 이삭중은 1,141 kg을 나타내어 통계적으로 ‘단옥3호’와 평균이삭수에서는 차이를 보였고 이삭중에서는 유의차를 나타내지 않았다(Tables 4, 5). 종자 채종은 2:1, 3:1, 4:1로 시험 결과 4:1에서 213 kg/10a가 생산되어 가장 많은 채종량을 나타내었다(Table 6).
적응지역 및 재배상의 유의점
‘백금옥’은 우리나라 모든 지역에서 재배 가능하며 1대 단교잡 단옥수수 품종으로 매년 종자 갱신을 통해 종자가 이용되어야 한다. 특히 조명나방에 대해서 감수성을 나타내어 적절한 시기에 방제를 하여야 하며, 찰옥수수 등 다른 종류의 옥수수와 200 m 이상 격리재배로 단옥수수가 가지고 있는 고유 특성을 유지할 수 있다. 너무 과도한 밀식은 재배시 끝달림 불량 등 이삭 상품성이 떨어뜨리며, 권장 재식밀도는 60×25 cm 또는 그 이상으로 해야 한다.
‘백금옥’은 하나의 이삭에 황색과 백색의 옥수수 알이 혼재되어 있고 sugary enhancer(se) 유전자를 가지고 있으며 웅수의 영과 약에 안토시아닌 색소를 가지고 있어 표준품종인 ‘단옥3호’와 고유한 특성에 차이가 있었다. ‘백금옥’은 출사일수가 63일로 조숙종에 속하며 표준품종과 비교하여 간장은 179 cm로 크고 착수고는 착수고율은 32%로 유사하였다. ‘백금옥’은 표준품종보다 10a당 이삭수는 6,411개/10a로 많았으며 풋이삭중은 1,141 kg/10a로 유사하였다. 품질특성에 있어 ‘백금옥’은 표준품종보다 당도가 19.5 °Bx로 높았으며 관능평가 결과 전체기호도가 5.4로 식미가 우수하였다. ‘백금옥’은 경기, 강원, 충북, 경북, 경남 등지에서 적응성이 있는 것으로 나타났으며 타 지역으로 재배확산을 위해서는 지역별 현지적응성 평가도 이루어져야 할 것으로 생각된다. ‘백금옥’은 단옥수수 열성인자 se를 가지고 있어 다른 종류의 옥수수와 200 m 이상 격리 재배하여야 옥수수 알의 고유한 특성을 유지할 수 있다. 또한 조명나방에 감수성이기 때문에 조명나방을 적기에 방제하여야 하고 밀식 재배 시 이삭이 작아지고 이삭 끝달림이 불량해질 수 있으므로 가급적 표준재배(60×25 cm)보다 넓게 심기를 권장하며 강풍을 동반한 우기에는 배수관리에 각별히 유의하여야 안정적인 재배가 가능하다.
