New Cultivar Developed

The Goji berry line CBP06419-243 was selected from the hybrids (F1) between CBP03310-250 (IT232705) and CBP05399-1. The line used for crossing was tetraploid induced by the colchicine treatment on bud. Preliminary yield tests using this line were performed from 2009 to 2011, and the final selected line was named ‘Cheongyang 18’, which was subsequently registered under the name ‘Whasu’ in 2015. The specific characteristics of this cultivar are summarized as follows: The flowers are distinctly larger, fruit is medium in size, long oblong, and red, and flowering commenced on June 21. Branching by pruning generated less than the reference variety Cheongmyeong. The leaf infection rates by Eriophyes macrodonis Keifer were as high as 7.7%. Anthracnose on fruits in open field was slightly more severe compared with the reference cultivar, but the infection rates in rain shelter greenhouses was similar. The content of betaine and free sugar in dry fruit was higher than that of the reference cultivar. The dry-fruit yield decreased about 13% in open field, but increased 18% in rain shelter greenhouses. The cultivar ‘Whasu’ is suitable for cultivation in rain shelter greenhouses because of self-compatibility and high yield. It is not necessary the companion cultivar (Registration No. 6345).

As the farmers who grow Chinese matrimony vine (Lycium chinense Miller) in rain-shelter greenhouses increase, it is necessary to develop a cultivar with early-flowering. In addition, the new varieties should be continuously selected in order to adapt to climate change and to respond to future demands. The new line, CB07423-104, was selected from the cross between Cheongmyeong (IT232706) and CB04341-286 in 2007 to breed a cultivar with early flowering and high yielding. Its preliminary yield tests were performed from 2009 to 2010 and the selected line was named Cheongyang 17. Its regional yield trial was carried out in Cheongyang, Yesan and Jindo from 2011 to 2013 and Cheongyang 17 was registered as the new variety, ‘Cheonghong’ (Certificate on grant of plant variety rights: Grant number No.5642, Protection period 06/07/2015 ~ 05/07/2035) in 2013. The major characteristics were summarized as follows;

The plant shape was spreading type. Leaf had ellipsoidal small sizes and 3~5 leaves on a node. The fruit was oblong and yellowish red. The flowering time was June 17 and faster about 11 days than the check ‘Cheongmyeong’. The branching was generated less than the check variety. This cultivar has a lot of flowers bloom per a node and many fruits per a plant. The resistances to anthracnose and eriophyidae mite were a little better than that of the check variety. The content of betaine of dried-fruit and brix degree of fresh fruit were higher than those of the check. The dried-fruit yield was 16 percent higher than the check at regional yield trials conducted at Cheongyang, Yesan and Jindo. Applications are customarily available in both medicinal and edible. This variety has self-incompatibility. So, the companion variety, Cheongmyeong, was required as pollinizer and recommended to plant 1 : 1.

The new Chinese matrimony vine line, CB04340-64 was selected from the hybrids(F1) between CB02214-131 (IT232701) and Cheongyang 7 (IT232601) in 2004 to breed the cultivar with high quality and yielding. Its preliminary yield tests were performed from 2006 to 2008 and the selected line was named Cheongyang 14. Its regional yield trial was carried out in Cheongyang, Yesan and Jindo from 2009 to 2011 and Cheongyang 14 was registered as the new variety, ‘Cheongkwang’ in 2011. The specific characteristics were summarized as follows; The leaf was ellipsoidal and small size. The fruit type was oblong and middle size. The flowering time was June 26 with medium flowering. The branching by twice pruning was generated a lot more than the check variety, Cheongun. The resistances to anthracnose and eriophyidae mite were similar to that of the check variety. The content of betaine of dried-fruit and brix degree of fresh fruit were higher than that of the check. The dried-fruit yield was increased about 15 percent in preliminary yield tests and 6 percent regional yield trials. This variety has self-incompatibility. So, the companion variety, Cheongmyeong, was required as pollinizer. (Certificate on grant of plant variety rights: Grant number No.4794, Protection Period 10/02/2014∼09/02/2034).
