DOI: https://doi.org/10.9787/KJBS.2024.56.3.337

A new persimmon (Diospyros kaki L. Thunb.) cultivar ‘Yeonsu’ was derived from a cross between ‘Ro-19’ and ‘Taishu’ in 2009 and finally selected in 2016. The average maturing date was October 20th in Yeoung-am province. ‘Yeonsu’ has a medium average fruit size (235 g) and high soluble solids (17.0 °Bx). The flesh taste was good with soft texture and juice. The fruit shape was very wide ovule when viewed from the side and the fruit's skin color was yellow-orange. Physiological disorders, including fruit cracking or skin fine cracking rarely occurred, but intense sunlight may cause pericarp blackening (Registration No. 8918).

Published online June 1, 2024
DOI: https://doi.org/10.9787/KJBS.2024.56.2.125

‘Olnuri’ is a new variety of early ripening sweet persimmon obtained in 2006 by crossing the mid-ripening sweet persimmons ‘Shinshu’ and ‘Taishuu’ at Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services. Line selection among the seedlings of ‘Shinshu’ and ‘Taishuu’ hybrids was carried out in 2014, and detailed characteristic investigations on fruit quality and tree growth were conducted from 2018 to 2019. ‘Olnuri’ matured around September 24, an average of 25 days earlier than ‘Uenishiwase.’ The tree is semi-upright, and only female flowers bloom. The trees bear oblate fruits with orange skin. The average weight of the fruit is 280 g, which is significantly higher than that of ‘Uenishiwase’ (190 g). The soluble solids content is higher and the firmness is lower than that of ‘Uenishiwase.’ There is almost no apex splitting or calyx end cracking. The marketable fruit rate is 80.0%, which is lower than that of ‘Uenishiwase’ (91.2%, data not shown). In the future, as a fully ripened persimmon in late September, ‘Olnuri’ is expected to play a big role in creating the sweet persimmon market during the autumn harvest period (Registration No. 8917).

AbstractIn 2014, a new high-quality, pollination-constant, non-astringent persimmon (Diospyros kaki L. Thunb.) cultivar, ‘Wonmi’, a breeding of ‘Fuyu’ and ‘Taishu’ from 2005, was developed. ‘Wonmi’ fruit were harvested on October 8 in Yeongam, South Korea. The fruit are medium-sized (220 g on average), with a high amount of soluble solids (15.1 °Bx). The juicy flesh has a pleasant taste and crispy texture. The fruit shape is round oblate, and the skin color is orange with a graceful appearance. Physiological disorders, such as stylar-end or fine skin cracking, rarely occur in this cultivar (Registration No. 7724).

Korean. J. Breed. Sci. 2018;50(3):340-343.   Published online September 1, 2018
DOI: https://doi.org/10.9787/KJBS.2018.50.3.340

The persimmon cultivar Gamnuri (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) is a new pollination-constant astringent (PCA) type developed by the Sweet Persimmon Research Institute of Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services. This cultivar was selected from the seedlings of the cross between the Sunami and Johongsi cultivars in 1997. After being selected as a prominent seedling line in 2006, its tree growth and fruit characteristics were investigated from 2016 to 2017. The tree grew vigorously during the young stage and showed a spreading shape as it aged. Only female flowers bloomed. The flowering and harvest dates were May 20 and October 16, respectively, which was similar to that of the Sangju-Dungsi control cultivar. The fruits of Gamnuri were characterized by a red-orange skin color with a round, flat shape. The average fruit size was 370 g, which was 1.7 times larger than that of the control. Ninety-three percent of the fruit was marketable with a rare occurrence of calyx-end cracking, which was similar to that of the Sangju-Dungsi cultivar. The soluble solids and flesh firmness were 16.7°Bx and 15.8N, respectively, which was lower than that of the control. Notably, matured fruits maintained their quality for an extended period of time on the tree. When the fruits from the Gamnuri cultivar were processed into sliced-dried fruits, the product had a great taste with good color.

Breeding of ‘Migamjosaeng’ (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) Early-Maturing Sweet Persimmon with High Quality
Seong-Cheol Kim, Ji-Young Son, Yeo-Ok Park, Seong-Tae Choi, Gwang-Hwan Ahn, Eun-Gyeong Kim
Korean. J. Breed. Sci. 2017;49(4):410-413.   Published online December 1, 2017
DOI: https://doi.org/10.9787/KJBS.2017.49.4.410

‘Migamjosaeng’ (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) is a new pollination-variant non-astringent type (PVNA) persimmon cultivar developed by Sweet Persimmon Research Institute of Gyeongnam Agricultural Research & Extension Services. This cultivar was selected among the seedlings obtained from the cross between ‘Mazumotowase-Fuyu’ and ‘Nishimurawase’ in 1995. The seedlings were cultivated from 1996 to 2001 and ‘Migamjosaeng’ was selected in 2002. The tree growth habit and fruit characteristics of ‘Migamjosaeng’ were investigated from 2004 to 2007. The tree growth habit was moderate vigor and showed spreading shape. Flowers bloomed only in female flowers. The flowering time was similar to that of ‘Nishimurawase’ (control) in late May, but the harvest time was about 3 days earlier than ‘Nishimurawase’ in late September. ‘Migamjosaeng’ is characterized by its beautiful orange skin color with round flat shape of fruits. Average fruit size was about 160g. Soluble solids were 16.6°Brix and higher than that of control (14.5°Brix), which contributed to its excellent tastiness. It was noteworthy that occurrence of calyx-end cracked fruits and striped fruit was very rare compared with the control. Therefore, ‘Migamjosaeng’ trees produced marketable fruits much higher than the control tree. Flesh firmness was slightly high and similar to ‘Nishimurawase’.
