‘조우’는 2023년에 농촌진흥청 국립식량과학원에서 새롭게 육성한 사일리지용 밀 품종이다. ‘조우’의 파성은 Ⅰ로 춘파형이고, 잎색은 녹색, 이삭은 황백색에 방추형이고, 종자는 적립의 대립이다. 출수기는 밭 조건과 논 조건에서 각각 4월 22일과 4월 17일이며, 수확기는 밭 조건과 논 조건에서 각각 5월 21일과 5월 17일로 이모작재배가 가능하다. 단위면적(m2)당 수수는 752개로 ‘청우’보다 적지만, 천립중은 48.1 g으로 ‘청우’보다 3.6 g이 높았다. 건물수량은 밭 조건에서 13 MT/ha, 논 조건에서 15 MT/ha로 ‘청우’와 비슷하였다. ‘조우’의 재해저항성은 ‘청우’보다 도복은 강했지만, 내한성과 수발아 저항성은 다소 약하였다. 붉은곰팡이병은 저항성이었고, 흰가루병은 중도 감수성으로 재배 시 주의가 요구된다. ‘조우’는 장수형 밀로서 ‘청우’보다 수확기나 다소 늦지만, 장수형 중에서는 출수가 빨라 사료용 밀로 재배하기에 유리하다.

‘Jou’ is a new wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar developed by the Rural Development Administration for whole-crop forage with early maturity in 2023. To develop an early maturing forage wheat cultivar suitable for double cropping systems in Korea, an artificial cross was made in 2010 using ‘Taejoong,’ a tall cultivar with high biomass production, as the female parent and ‘Keumkang,’ an early maturing cultivar with superior agronomic traits, as the male parent. After bulk cultivation in Iksan, the pedigree was selected in Iksan and Wanju, and the early maturing tall line, IW2010145-B-B-44-1-5-2-5-1, was selected in 2018. ‘Jou’ exhibited favorable agronomic characteristics, including tolerance to lodging and fusarium head blight and high yield of whole-crop dry matter. The heading and harvest dates of ‘Jou’ were April 17 and May 17, respectively, which were similar to those of ‘Cheongwoo.’ ‘Jou’ had lower spike number per m2 (752), and higher 1,000-grain weight (48.1 g) than those of ‘Cheongwoo’ (1,025, and 44.5 g, respectively). In the regional yield trial, the average whole-crop dry matter yield in paddy fields was 14.6 MT ha-1. Although the harvest time of ‘Jou’ is slightly later than that of ‘Cheongwoo,’ it is a tall-type wheat cultivar with relatively early heading among tall cultivars, making it suitable for forage wheat cultivation (Registration No. 10756).
