소분지 대립 다수성 땅콩 신품종 ‘화선’
A Large Grain and High-Yielding Peanut Cultivar ‘Huaseon’

A new peanut variety ‘Huaseon’ (Arachis hypogaea ssp. hypogaea L.) was developed at the Department of Southern Area Crop Science, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in Milyang 2013. This was developed from the cross between ‘Iksan 31’ with Virginia typed short stem and ‘SP9614’ with Shinpung-typed larger grain. ‘Huaseon’ which is a Shinpung plant type had 10 branches per plant and its length of main stem was 41 cm. Each pod has two grains with brown testa and long ellipse-shaped large kernel. Its yield components showed 45 pods per plant, 84 g of 100-seed-weight and 79% of pod shelling ratio in the regional yield trials (RYT). Seed quality showed 47.3% of crude oil and 27.6% of protein content. This variety showed resistant to early leaf spot and had more resistant to stem rot and lodging, compared to reference variety. In the regional yield trials for 3 years ‘Huaseon’ was more productive than reference variety by 12% with 4.78 MT/ha for grain production.

Scale Range Effects of Sensory Evaluation by Cup Arrangement Ranking Method in Cooked Rice

Cup arrangement ranking method (CARM) is a method for a rapid and small-sample sensory evaluation of cooked rice in rice breeding program. This study was compared to four different scale ranges (1~11, 1~9, 1~7 and 1~5) for improving the efficiency of CARM using sixteen Japonica and four Tongil-type cultivars. The wide scale ranges were higher of that than narrow scale range on determination coefficient between standard sensory evaluation method (SSEM) and CARM. However, the wide scale ranges were required more time and efforts than those of the narrow scale ranges for eating sensory evaluation of cooked rice. The wide scale ranges of 1~11 and 1~9 were difficult to distinguish the differences between the cultivars in the scale 3 and 4. On the other hand, the narrow scale ranges of 1~7 and 1~5 could distinguish the difference between cultivars in all scales. We suggest that two scale ranges for CARM were 1~7 (7 classes) in including Tongil type cultivars and 1~5 (5 classes) in Japonica cultivars.

A new peanut variety ‘Sinpalkwang’ (Arachis hypogaea ssp. hypogaea L.) was developed at the Department of Southern Area Crop Science, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in Milyang 2012. This was developed from the cross between line ‘HP299’, crossed high yielding variety ‘Palkwang’ and short stem cultivar ‘PI156649’, and ‘Palkwang’. ‘Sinpalkwang’ which is a Virginia plant type had 25 branches per plant and its length of main stem was 41 cm. Each pod has two grains with brown testa and long ellipse-shaped large kernel. Its yield components showed 45 pods per plant, 92 g of 100-seed-weight and 79% of pod shelling ratio in the regional yield trials (RYT). Seed quality showed 45.4% of crude oil and 29.2% of protein content. This variety also showed more resistant to web blotch, compared with reference variety. In the regional yield trials for 3 years ‘Sinpalkwang’ was more productive than reference variety by 28% with 5.4 MT/ha for grain production.

A new peanut variety ‘Ami’ (Arachis hypogaea ssp. fastigiata.) was bred at the Department of Functional Crop, NICS, in Milyang in 2012. This was developed by pedigree method after the cross between the short stem cultivar ‘Satonoka’ and the disease resistant cultivar ‘Milyang16’. ‘Ami’ which is Shinpung plant type had 10 branches per plant and its length of main stem was 50 cm. Each pod has two grains with brown testa and long ellipse-shaped large kernel, and its 100 seed weight was 84 g in the regional yield trials (RYT). ‘Ami’ showed 50.5% of crude oil and 60.5% of oleic acid composition in dry seed, and had 24.9 mg/g of sucrose and 4.5 mg/g of tannin content in fresh peanut. In the regional yield trials, ‘Ami’ was more productive than reference variety by 7% with 10.10 MT/ha for fresh pod production and by 14% with 4.51 MT/ha for dry grain production.

A Wheat Variety, ‘Goso’ with Low Protein, Good Cookie, Red Grain Wheat and Resistance to Pre-harvest Sprouting

‘Goso’, a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar was developed by the National Institute of Crop Science, RDA for end-use diversity. It was derived from the cross ‘Gobun/Ol” during 1998. ‘Goso’ was released from the line named as ‘Iksan325’ in 2010 after yield trials test in conducted for three years from 2008. ‘Goso’ is an awned, semi-dwarf, red grain and soft winter wheat. The heading and maturity date of ‘Goso’ were similar to ‘Keumkang’. ‘Goso’ had similar test weight (799 g/L) and lower 1,000-grain weight (42.5 g) than ‘Keumkang’ (804 g/L and 46.7 g, respectively). ‘Goso’ showed resistance to winter hardiness and pre-harvest sprouting, which withering rate on the low ridge (4.4%) and lower rate of pre-harvest sprouting (4.0%) than ‘Keumkang’ (1.6% and 29.8%, respectively). ‘Goso’ showed lower flour yield (63.7%), protein content (9.8%), SDS-sedimentation volume (30.0 ml) and gluten content (7.2%) than ‘Keumkang’ (73.6%, 12.6%, 50.0 ㎖ and 10.8%, respectively). It showed larger diameter (88 mm) and top-grade (5) of cookie than ‘Keumkang’ (79 mm and 2, respectively). HMW-GS compositions of ‘Goso’ were 2* in Glu-A1, 7+8 in Glu-B1 and 2.2+12 in Glu-D1, respectively. GBSS composition of ‘Goso’ was same with ‘Keumkang’ and expressed wild type. Pinb-D1 was wild type that was different in ‘Keumkang’. Average yield of ‘Goso’ in the regional adaptation yield trial test was 657 kg/10a in upland and 561 kg/10a in paddy field, which was 21% and 7% higher than those of ‘Keumkang’ (545 kg/10a and 524 kg/10a, respectively).

Starch and Pasting Characteristics in Relation to Stickiness of Rice Cake Using Glutinous Rice Varieties

This study was conducted to analyze the starch and pasting properties of fourteen glutinous rice varieties with different maturity, and we compared the textural characteristic difference in relation to stickiness of glutinous rice cake. The whiteness values of grain appearance showed significantly differences in the order of early < medium < mid-late maturing glutinous rice varieties. Early maturing glutinous rice varieties exhibited a little high tendency for crude protein content than that of other varieties. Mid-late glutinous rice varieties showed higher of short chain ratio of 6 to 12 in DP of amylopectin whereas, medium length chains of 13 to 24 were significantly low. According to Rapid Visco-Analyzer measurement glutinous rice flours and starches, peak time showed high negative correlation with short chains of 6 to 12 in DP. The hardness of mid-late maturing glutinous rice cake was distinctly lower than that of the other glutinous rice varieties. Furthermore, mid-late maturing glutinous rice varieties, Baegseolchal, Dongjinchal and Baekogchal tend to show lower and slower in hardness changes of rice cake during storage. The hardness changes of glutinous rice cake had positive correlation with the amylose content and peak time and negative correlation with short chains of 6 to 12 in DP of amylopectin, respectively.

‘Joongmo2004’, a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar was developed by the National Institute of Crop Science, RDA. It was derived from the cross ‘Bacanora88/Keumkang//Keumkang’ during 1996. ‘Joongmo2004’ was evaluated as ‘Iksan320’ in advance yield trial test in 2006. It was tested in the regional yield trial test between 2007 and 2009. Its heading date was April 26 in upland and April 23 in paddy filed conditions, and Maturity date was June 5 in upland and June 4 in paddy field, which were similar to Keumkang, respectively. It showed 830 in number of spikes per m2, 35 of grain number per spike, 44.9g of 1,000 grain weight, and 806g of test weight. ‘Joongmo2004’ showed moderate to fusarium graminearum (Scab) in test of specific character although ‘Keumkang’ is susceptible to scab. ‘Joongmo2004’ had higher flour yield (75.5%) than ‘Keumkang’(72.5%). ‘Joongmo2004’ showed similar ash (0.42%), lower protein content (12.3%), SDS-sedimentation volume (43.0 ml) and gluten content (10.3%) than ‘Keumkang’ (0.42%, 13.1%, 57.8ml and 10.8%, respectively). It showed higher lightness (89.97), redness (-1.38) and yellowness (10.76) in flour color than ‘Keumkang’ (89.61, -1.15 and 9.46, respectively). ‘Joongmo2004’ exhibited lower hardness (3.50N), similar springiness and higher cohesiveness of cooked noodles (0.92 and 0.65) compared to ‘Keumkang’ (4.54N, 0.93, and 0.63, respectively). The average grain yield in the regional yield trial was 517 kg/10a in upland and 534 kg/10a in paddy field, which were 11% lower and 3% higher than that of the check cultivar, ‘Keumkang’, respectively.

‘Joongmo2003’, a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar was developed by the National Institute of Crop Science, RDA. It was derived from the cross ‘SW86054/Keumkang’ during 1997. ‘Joongmo2003’ was evaluated as ‘Iksan318’ in advance yield trial test in 2006. It was tested in the regional yield trial test between 2007 and 2009. Its heading date was April 24 in upland and April 21 in paddy filed conditions, which was two days earlier than those of the check cultivar ‘Keumkang’, respectively, and maturity date was June 4 in upland and June 2 in paddy field, one or two days earlier than those of ‘Keumkang’, respectively. ‘Joongmo2003’ showed resistance to winter hardiness and pre-harvest sprouting, which lower withering rate on the low ridge (0.3%) and rate of pre-harvest sprouting (18.5%) than ‘Keumkang’ (9.2 and 25.8%, respectively). ‘Joongmo2003’ showed similar protein content (13.2%), lower SDS-sedimentation volume (54.0 ml) and higher gluten content (11.7%) than ‘Keumkang’ (13.1%, 57.8ml and 10.8%, respectively). It showed higher lightness (89.85) of flour and noodle dough sheet than ‘Keumkang’ (89.81 and 80.28, respectively). ‘Joongmo2003’ exhibited similar hardiness (3.84N), springiness and cohesiveness of cooked noodles (0.92 and 0.63) compared to ‘Keumkang’ (4.54N, 0.93, and 0.63, respectively). The average grain yield in the regional yield trial was 555 kg/10a in upland and 485 kg/10a in paddy field, which were 4% and 7% lower than those of the check cultivar, ‘Keumkang’, respectively.
